AsiaInfo to build device management system for China Unicom

AsiaInfo Holdings has signed a contract with China Unicom to build a device management system that will allow China Unicom to remotely diagnose and manage mobile devices and enable subscribers to install new applications over-the-air.

With the system in place China Unicom's support team will be able to remotely carry out processes such as parameter resets, patch downloads and application installation. By enabling users to download firmware updates, software upgrades and applications over the air, the system will also help promote new services and applications.

China Unicom recently sold its CDMA service to China Telecom, and began to roll out it a new 3G network based on W-CDMA technology in conjunction with its existing GSM900 network. It will be in competition for China's recently opened 3G market with China Mobile, using locally-developed TD-SCDMA and China Telecom, using CDMA2000 technology.
