Telit Communications demos automobile M2M module for EU’s life saving eCall system

Machine-2-Machine (M2M) specialist Telit Communications (AIM: TCM) has successfully demonstrated the eCall functionality in its specialised automotive modules, designed as part of the EU-driven vehicle emergency call system. According to Telit, the successful implementation of the eCall in-band modem capability into its GE864-Quad-Automotive V2 module marks a milestone in the company’s research activities.

ECall is a EU-driven pan-European vehicle emergency call system which is planned to greatly reduce emergency services response times. In case of an accident, the eCall can be generated either manually or automatically through the activation of in-vehicle sensors.

“Telit has a remarkable track record in developing innovative M2M solutions for the automotive industry ... we put a lot effort during the last years developing eCall in-band modem capability to support the public goal of helping to save lives on roads”,  Telit’s MD of Strategic Accounts & Corporate Business Development,  Dominikus Hierl, commented.

The eCall-enabled vehicle system will connect to the relevant Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP), to provide the PSAP operator with a ‘minimum set of data’ which includes location, time, and vehicle description.

The eSafety Forum, a European Commission joint initiative with industry partners, has promoted the introduction of eCall standards and all relevant requirements. The installation of emergency call systems (IVS) in all vehicles will begin during 2010 and the European commission expects full implementation by 2014.

Telit said its worldwide customers will benefit from integrated eCall functionality in the GE864-Quad-Automotive V2 modules as the most economical overall solution in the market.

The company also noted a report, by Juniper Research, which states that the automotive industry remains the most promising M2M area despite the effects of the ongoing downturn, and that eCall implementation is the key driver for this growth.

According to Juniper, in the EU, 40,000 people are killed every year with more than 1.2 million injured, and the economic loss caused by road accidents is estimated at €160bn per year.  ECall has the potential to save 2,500 lives and €26 billion each year across Europe, Juniper stated.
