Ceramic Fuel Cells sells first gas-to-electricity unit in UK

Ceramic Fuel Cells (AIM, ASX: CFU) has sold its first BlueGen gas-to-electricity unit in the United Kingdom, to Ideal Boilers. According to the company, the BlueGen units - which convert mains gas into electricity - boasts greater efficiency compared to the current European power grid.

Ideal Boilers design and manufacture heating systems for the UK commercial and domestic heating industry. The company’s product range includes traditional domestic gas boilers, as well as renewable technologies like Solar Thermal and Air Source Heat Pumps.

Ideal Boilers intends to test and demonstrate the BlueGen unit at its product development and manufacturing facility in Hull, England.

The BlueGen unit connects to an existing gas pipes and is about the size of a dishwasher. BlueGen’s fuel cell technology converts mains gas into electricity. “Over a year, each BlueGen can produce twice the electricity needed to power an average UK home”, Ceramic Fuel Cells stated.

The timing of this first sale coincides with the start of the UK Government's feed-in tariff, which became effective from 1st April 2010. Through the feed-in system, the surplus electricity can be sold back to the UK grid.

Under the terms of the feed-in tariff, homeowners will receive 10p for every kilowatt hour of electricity generated, plus an additional 3p for every kilowatt hour of electricity exported back to the local power grid.

According to Ceramic Fuel Cells it is continuing to build its order book for BlueGen, from major utilities and other foundation customers in Europe, Japan and Australia, including E.ON, EWE, Gasterra, Mitsui & Co. and Osaka Gas.
